Dustin Johnson blames the bumpy greens for his U.S. Open choke
Dustin Johnson choked away the U.S. Open last month. There's no way around it. On the green in two on the par-5 18th hole, needing a eagle to win and a birdie to force a Monday playoff, DJ hit his first putt about three feet past the hole, then missed the comebacker. It really was tough to watch.
But DJ doesn't exactly see it that way, which probably makes sense. It takes a certain amount of irrationality to be a competitive athlete who believes that they'll win all the time, especially when you're handed a loss of the magnitude that Dustin Johnson just experienced.
The ball doesn't look like it bounced in the above video, but DJ was convinced it did. In fact, he referred to the ball "bouncing" a number of different times during his first press conference at the British Open since the collapse:
"I hit a good putt on the way back, and it just bounced and missed left."
"I felt like I was hitting good putts, just it's tough to judge bounces."
"Coming down the back nine, I was hitting the shots that I wanted to hit. Unfortunately the ball wasn't bouncing in the hole."
