Supermarkets have long been homes of donation opportunities. From community donation bins to in-person fundraisers, they are the perfect place to practice your good deed for the week.
And now your chance to be a better human is about to get a lot easier with Lidl’s major change to its checkout system.
The grocery giant has announced plans to incorporate a donation scheme into their till system, which will ask customers to donate 30p per transaction to charity.
All cash will go to NSPCC’s Childline service, which has been helping children for over 140 years through in-person and online support, therapy, helplines, research and advocating for productive change.
And the ‘digital micro-donations’ all add up, with an expected £5 million set to be raised by 2030 as part of Lidl’s more than eight-year-long Pennies partnership.
This will add to the over £10 million Lidl has already made for the charity since 2017, with funds going towards NSPCC initiatives such as Speak Out, Stay Safe.

According to the supermarket, the money donated over the next five years will contribute to helping the charity achieve the huge goal of doubling the reach of Childline’s Twilight team.
That’s over 100,000 children and young people who will be able to access the support they need.
‘We are delighted to be extending our partnership with the NSPCC and to give voice to the amazing work they do to ensure that children across the country have the support they need,’ Lidl GB CEO Ryan McDonnell said in a statement.
‘Thanks to the incredible generosity of our colleagues and customers, we’ve managed to raise an astonishing £10m for the NSPCC to date, but we want that figure to keep growing.

‘By bringing Pennies into our stores, we’re offering our customers a simple way to contribute to causes that matter, turning small donations into a significant collective impact.’
The checkout changes are expected to be complete across all UK stores by mid-February, following a regional trial.
You don’t have to stop at loose change though. If you’d like to make a larger donation after your weekly shop, you can do so on the NSPCC or Lidl website.
