President John Adams moves into a tavern in Washington, D.C.

John Adams, the second president of the United States, becomes the first president to reside in Washington, D.C., when he takes up residence at Union Tavern in Georgetown.

The city of Washington was created to serve as the nation’s capital because of its geographical position in the center of the existing new republic. The states of Maryland and Virginia ceded land around the Potomac River to form the District of Columbia, and work began on Washington in 1791. French architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant designed the city’s radical layout, full of dozens of circles, crisscross avenues, and plentiful parks. In 1792, work began on the neoclassical White House building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue under the guidance of Irish-American architect James Hoban, whose White House design was influenced by Leinster House in Dublin and by a building sketch in James Gibbs’ Book of Architecture. In the next year, Benjamin Latrobe began construction on the other principal government building, the U.S. Capitol.
On June 3, 1800, President Adams moved to a temporary residence in the new capital as construction was completed on the executive mansion. On November 1, the president was welcomed into the White House. The next day, Adams wrote to his wife about their new home: “I pray heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house, and on all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but wise men ever rule under this roof!” Soon after, Abigail Adams arrived at the White House, and on November 17 the U.S. Congress convened for the first time at the U.S. Capitol.

During the War of 1812, both buildings were set on fire in 1814 by British soldiers in retaliation for the burning of government buildings in Canada by U.S. troops. Although a torrential downpour saved the still uncompleted Capitol building, the White House was burned to the ground. The mansion was subsequently rebuilt and enlarged under the direction of James Hoban, who added east and west terraces to the main building along with a semicircular south portico and a colonnaded north portico. Work was completed on the White House in the 1820s and it has remained largely unchanged since.

US Naval reconnaissance spotted Japanese transports west of Midway. B-17 bombers from the island attacked the transports but inflicted no damage. US Navy Carrier Task Forces 16 and 17 maneuvered to a more favorable position for attack based on this reconnaissance information.

What is technically considered the 'Battle of Midway' began this day with the Japanese attacking the base on the island itself. While the Japanese were planning a second attack on the island, aircraft from US carriers USS Hornet, Yorktown, and Enterprise found targets on the Japanese carriers. While the Hornet's torpedo aircraft were ineffective in their attack with the loss of an entire squadron, the Japanese changed strategy and were unprepared for the high-level bomber attacks from Yorktown and Enterprise in which US aircraft struck three Japanese carriers, Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu, resulting in their loss. The Japanese would hit Yorktown once and again, thinking that they sunk her with their first strike and assuming they got another carrier. The second strike would require Admiral Fletcher to transfer his flag to a cruiser and relinquish overall command to Admiral Spruance on Enterprise. With Yorktown still afloat and its aircraft moved to Hornet and Enterprise, US carrier aircraft would ultimately sink the fourth Japanese carrier Hiryu later in the battle.

On June 4, 1940, the last vessel carrying the British Expeditionary Force as well as French and Belgian troops, left Dunkirk, France, wrapping up the historic, almost miraculous evacuation. An estimated 338,000 spldiers were rescued - mostly by large naval vessels by way of the Eastern Mole (pier), but approximately 1/3 of the troops were ferried to Britain by the famous 'little ships' - civilian craft.

Within months, the Battle of Britain would dominate the skies over the UK and the English Channel.

    Henry Ford test-drives his “Quadricycle”

At approximately 4:00 a.m. on June 4, 1896, in the shed behind his home on Bagley Avenue in Detroit, Henry Ford unveils the “Quadricycle,” the first automobile he ever designed or drove.

Ford was working as the chief engineer for the main plant of the Edison Illuminating Company when he began working on the Quadricycle. On call at all hours to ensure that Detroit had electrical service 24 hours a day, Ford was able to use his flexible working schedule to experiment with his pet project—building a horseless carriage with a gasoline-powered engine. His obsession with the gasoline engine had begun when he saw an article on the subject in a November 1895 issue of American Machinist magazine. The following March, another Detroit engineer named Charles King took his own hand-built vehicle—made of wood, it had a four-cylinder engine and could travel up to five miles per hour—out for a ride, fueling Ford’s desire to build a lighter and faster gasoline-powered model.

As he would do throughout his career, Ford used his considerable powers of motivation and organization to get the job done, enlisting friends–including King–and assistants to help him bring his vision to life. After months of work and many setbacks, Ford was finally ready to test-drive his creation–basically a light metal frame fitted with four bicycle wheels and powered by a two-cylinder, four-horsepower gasoline engine–on the morning of June 4, 1896. When Ford and James Bishop, his chief assistant, attempted to wheel the Quadricycle out of the shed, however, they discovered that it was too wide to fit through the door. To solve the problem, Ford took an axe to the brick wall of the shed, smashing it to make space for the vehicle to be rolled out.

With Bishop bicycling ahead to alert passing carriages and pedestrians, Ford drove the 500-pound Quadricycle down Detroit’s Grand River Avenue, circling around three major thoroughfares. The Quadricycle had two driving speeds, no reverse, no brakes, rudimentary steering ability and a doorbell button as a horn, and it could reach about 20 miles per hour, easily overpowering King’s invention. Aside from one breakdown on Washington Boulevard due to a faulty spring, the drive was a success, and Ford was on his way to becoming one of the most formidable success stories in American business history.

Japanese carrier Akagi was scuttled after being damaged beyond repair by US Naval bombers a day earlier. It was the first ship to be scuttled during WW2. Search parties were sent to find the carrier Hiryu which was found to have been sunk earlier by planes from the heavily damaged Yorktown and from Enterprise. Yamamoto called off the remaining campaign of attacks on Midway Atoll.
Efforts were made to save the damaged Yorktown. Picket destroyers surrounded her after it was determined that she was salvageable and repair crews boarded her.

Halsey's US Third Fleet encountered a typhoon that damaged multiple ships. Waves ripped off part of the forward flight deck above the bows of the carriers Hornet and Bennington. Multiple ships suffered damage and many planes were lost overboard.

    Six Day War Begins

Israel responds to a build-up of Arab forces along its borders by launching a preemptive aerial attack against Egypt. Jordan subsequently entered the fray, but the Arab coalition was no match for Israel’s armed forces. In six days of fighting, Israel occupied the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, the Golan Heights of Syria and the West Bank and Arab sector of East Jerusalem, both previously under Jordanian rule. By the time the United Nations cease-fire took effect on June 11, Israel had more than doubled its size, including claiming the Old City of Jerusalem from Jordan.

The U.N. Security Council called for a withdrawal from all the occupied regions, but Israel declined, permanently annexing East Jerusalem and setting up military administrations in the occupied territories. Israel let it be known that Gaza, the West Bank, the Golan Heights and the Sinai would be returned in exchange for Arab recognition of the right of Israel to exist and guarantees against future attack. Arab leaders met in August to discuss the future of the Middle East. They decided upon a policy of no peace, no negotiations and no recognition of Israel, and made plans to defend the rights of Palestinian Arabs in the occupied territories.

Egypt, however, would eventually negotiate and make peace with Israel, and in 1982 the Sinai Peninsula was returned to Egypt in exchange for full diplomatic recognition of Israel. Egypt and Jordan later gave up their respective claims to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank to the Palestinians, who opened “land for peace” talks with Israel beginning in the 1990s. A permanent Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement remains elusive.

On June 5, 2012, one of the greatest literary influences in my early life died: Ray Bradbury. While Farenheit 451 is (deservedly) regarded as his finest work, 'The October Country' is what captured my young mind with a collection of macabre stories - a catalog of 'grotesques' in the traditional, literary sense of the word. 'I would also list 'Dandelion Wine' among my favorites.

A fine mind and a thoroughly engaging author, his writing encouraged me to look at the world from a different angle.

Continue to Rest In Peace, Ray Bradbury.

I hated literature in school and in college, but not him. He was a classic, an inspiration, as I grew up in a nuclear world where life was not simple but quite complicated and often quite dystopic. RIP Ray! His theater show still plays on a stream that I have.

A Japanese sub slipped through the destroyer picket and struck Yorktown with three torpedoes. Another struck the destroyer Hammann which was alongside and supporting the repair effort. The hit broke Hammann in half and she sank immediately, ordinance exploding below the surface which damaged Yorktown even more and forced her to be abandoned.

Operation Overlord and subordinate Operation Neptune (Normandy landings), aka D-day, occurred on this day. After extensive planning and multiple deception maneuvers, the actual landings began. Fake communication traffic and a fake Army Group led by Lt. General George Patton led the Nazis to believe the landings would occur at Calais. Occurring at Normandy caught them by surprise. After airborne troops dropped in from behind the lines and naval shells bombarded the shoreline, troops landed on four major beaches and began the liberation of Western Europe.

    06 June 1945

Aircraft from USS Yorktown (CV-10, Essex Class), part of the US Third Fleet, hammered the Japanese bases on Okinawa, preventing Japanese aircraft from taking off and striking the US fleet off shore. Yorktown and the rest of her task group, TG 38.4, had avoided the previous day's typhoon and were operating normally as they struck their targets.

President Jackson rides the Iron Horse

In Ellicott's Mills, Maryland, President Andrew Jackson boards a Baltimore & Ohio Railroad train for a pleasure trip to Baltimore. Jackson, who had never been on a train before, was the first president to take a ride on the "Iron Horse," as locomotives were known then.

The steam locomotive was first pioneered in England at the beginning of the 19th century by Richard Trevithick and George Stephenson. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad began operation in 1828 with horse-drawn cars, but after the successful run of the Tom Thumb, a steam train that nearly outraced a horse in a public demonstration in 1830, steam power was added. By 1831, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad had completed a line from Baltimore to Frederick, Maryland. Two years later, Andrew Jackson gave railroad travel its presidential christening.

The acceptance of railroads came quickly in the 1830s, and by 1840 the nation had almost 3,000 miles of railway, greater than the combined European total of only 1,800 miles. The railroad network expanded quickly in the years before the Civil War, and by 1860 the American railroad system had become a national network of some 30,000 miles. Nine years later, transcontinental railroad service became possible for the first time.

1933: America's first drive-in movie theater. Richard Hollingshead opens his "automobile movie theatre" in Camden County, New Jersey, featuring 400 car slots, a 40-x-50-foot screen, and three 6-foot speakers. The feature at the first U.S, drive-in theater is 'Wives Beware,' with admission costing a quarter per car and customer.
